IOS 5 hand on review

There has been a prolonged apprehension for the iOS 5 and now it is here. The reasons for the wait were the promises made by the Apple to come up with a more startling Game Center that every iOS user was wishing for accompanying with Wi-Fi syncing, PC- free setup and lots more.

Let’s move to all these features of iOS 5.

  • Notification Center

It is a new big feature offering the notifications like Android phones on the lock screen and most importantly in a sliding panel at the top of the screen that can be swiped down. Easily configure the Notification Center. It’s fun to work with it.

  • Lock Screen and Camera

Notifications appearing on the lock screen can be swiped to take you directly to the respective app or service. The best thing now you can start your camera from the lock screen. All you have to do is to double-press your Home Button; a small camera icon will appear on the right bottom. Once you click camera starts and use your volume control button as a shutter button. Its Photo app also lends you the opportunity to edit the pictures using features like cropping, removal of red-eye effect and enhancement.

  • Safari

New Safari like its desktop version includes a Reader for keeping the advertisement and other useless pages to give you a sophisticated environment to read. But remember Instapaper should not be dumped to give you the bookmark and syncing facility.

  • Reminders

Now live in future with cool feature of Reminders. If you are twit minded person then reminders are best for reminding you of the locations to visit in near future. You can even sync the reminders with iCal and Outlook.

  • iCloud

Something really helpful for the users! The iCloud app is free for the usage of first 5GB. It has all your backup of wireless connections and thus allowing the automatic synchronisation among the devices. You enable the backup on your iPhone or iPad for enough data storage and if data exceeds you can more space. Make sure that you are not wasting your free space with useless information.

Another outstanding feature for the iOS users! Suppose your friend has registered his phone as an iOS device and you are sending him a message then you will observe that the green colour of your message bubble goes blue and you won’t be charged for that message as that will be sent free via internet. You can even send videos with iMessage.

I think IOS 5 is a pretty good upgrade although not that much compared to what happened on IOS 4 upgrade. What I like most is the Twitter integration and improved notifications and alerts system. I have yet to experience any downside, although from what I heard there were bugs with video streaming. Can anyone confirm this?

iOS 5 really is a game changer. I still have my 3G iPhone and chose to wait for iPhone 5. Now I’m kicking myself because I really want the new OS and my old 3G can’t run iOS5. The notification is great but i think the camera access from the locked screen is great in an emergency!
