The phrase BlueJacking is attributed to Ajack – a member of the Esato boards who ‘discovered’ it back in 2002. In order to understand BlueJacking you need to understand Bluetooth.

Bluetooth technology is an open specification that enables short-range wireless connections between devices like laptop computers, mobile phones, printers & digital cameras. Bluetooth wireless technology uses a globally available frequency band (2.4GHz) for worldwide compatibility. In a nutshell, Bluetooth technology enables your digital peripherals to talk to each other without needing wires and cables.

BlueJacking is a new term used to define the activity of sending anonymous messages to other Bluetooth equipped devices (typically PDAs and Mobile Phones). Whilst the ability to receive such messages can be disabled or the Bluetooth functionality of the device can be switched off, the fun nature of BlueJacking is likely to encourage people to paticipate and to enjoy the new phenomenen.

It is important to point out at this point that it is vitually impossible to catch a ‘virus’ from BlueJacking and no damage can occur to your phone or PDA (they cannot read your email or access your data via BlueJacking).

How to BlueJack?

Assuming that you now have a Bluetooth phone in your hands, the first thing to do is to make sure that Bluetooth is enabled.

Now, remember that Bluetooth only works over short distances, so you need to find a crowd. BlueJacking is very new so not everyone will have a Bluetooth phone so the bigger the crowd the more likely you will have of finding a match. The Tube, on the train, in a Cafe or standing in line are all good places to start.

Some good places to bluejack:
- Busy shopping centre
- Train Station
- High Street
- On a train/ tube/ bus
- Cinema
- Café/ restaurant/ pub
- Mobile phone shop

You will now need to create a new Contact in your Phone’s contacts – however rather than putting someones name in the Name field you write your short message instead – so for example rather than creating a contact called Bob Jones you would write – “Hey, you have been BlueJacked!” instead

Now select the new contact and from the Menu of the phone choose “Send via Bluetooth”. This is a facility available within the Mobile Phone that was designed to send a Contact to someone else, however we are now going to use it to send our message that was contained in the Name field of the contact.

Your phone will start to search the airwaves for other devices that within range. If you are lucky you will see a list of them appear, or it will say that it cannot find any. If the latter happens then relocate to another crowd or wait a while and try again. If you have a list of found devices then let the fun begin.

Unfortunately, almost every Bluetooth enabled device will not yet be configured with a useful name – so you are going to have to guess. Try one at random and look around to see who grabs their phone and then looks perplexed when they read your message If you want to name your Phone so it appears as a name in the list on a BlueJackers phone.

You can build a library of contacts with predefined messages.

We cannot stress enough however that this is a FUN thing to do – don’t abuse the service or people as they can simply disable Bluetooth plus if you send abusive or defamatory messages you are liable to prosecution.

What if I don’t want to be BlueJacked?

That’s quite simple – just disable Bluetooth when you don’t need it and no-one can BlueJack you.

BlueJacking is meant to FUN! so make sure it is.

Here are some common sense rules below.

Don’t send abusive messages

Don’t threaten anyone

Don’t put your personal information in a BlueJack message

Don’t reveal yourself to the ‘victim’

Do disable BlueTooth if you don’t want to be BlueJacked

What do I do if I am BlueJacked?

Whilst you can choose to “Accept” the message it’s best to avoid doing so. If Accepted then the message will be added into your own Contact Phone Book and that could fill up quite quickly. If the sender has added any additional information into the Contact that they sent you then you can only see this by Accepting it and then opening up the new Contact. However as the idea behind BlueJacking is sending simple messages there is nothing to be gained by storing it. Simply choose “Delete” or “Erase” and then get your own back on them.

A Bluetooth wireless headset is a hands free device which you attach to your ear that allows you to perform other tasks, such as driving, using the computer, or anything else that requires the use of your hands, while still being able to talk on the phone.

Most often, Bluetooth wireless headsets are used to connect to Bluetooth enabled cell phones, but, you can also use to connect to a Bluetooth enabled computer.

Bluetooth wireless headsets can make your life easier, and more productive. If you are looking to multi-task, Bluetooth wireless headsets free your hands and let you concentrate on various everyday tasks .Bluetooth Headsets are now very stylish & offer crystal clear sound quality whilst being simple to use and supporting all the voice activated functions. Bluetooth Headsets cater to different requirements. Being cordless, hands-free communication has become so much simpler with Bluetooth Headsets.

Bluetooth only works with bluetooth enabled mobile devices, so you need to find out if your device has bluetooth functionality before buying a handset.

Bluetooth Headsets Features

Range

The one obvious feature that separates Bluetooth wireless headsets from other headsets is the fact that they are wireless. Depending on which Bluetooth Power Class and Version the headset falls under, Bluetooth wireless headsets can connect to other compatible Bluetooth enabled devices, like cell phones, up to 30 ft. away.

Active Noise Reduction (ANR)

Bluetooth wireless headsets with Active Noise Reduction (ANR) use headphones that reduce the noise that is heard around the person wearing the headset. ANR is a technology that is able to eliminate sound waves from reaching your eardrums.

ANR creates inverted sound waves that essentially fight off the sound waves coming towards your ears. ANR technology is available with virtually all types of Bluetooth wireless headsets.

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology is an innovative feature that allows headset speakers to compensate for background noise by increasing the listening volume level automatically.

LCD Display

Some of the newer, more advanced Bluetooth wireless headsets have built-in LCD screens that offer various different display features. The most common feature used with LCD screens is the caller ID feature.

An LCD display may also give you the option of viewing your phone’s personal phonebook. This is a nice feature when using the headset with your cell phone because it allows you to keep your phone in your pocket or bag while making or taking calls.

Control Functions and Menu

There are some Bluetooth wireless headsets, both with and without LCD screens, which have different functional buttons and menus. For example, many Bluetooth wireless headsets have volume control dials, answer/end buttons, and other various controls that allow you to navigate the headset’s menu functions.

Some headsets have menus that allow you to: View caller ID, view your phones personal phone book, view calls you’ve recently received or made, control the headset’s settings and possibly much more.

Ringtones and Vibration

Although we find the idea of a vibrating device attached to our head a little “unsettling”, you may consider a headset that vibrates when calls come in. We find headsets that offer various ringtones to be more accommodating.

Binaural Models

Bluetooth wireless headsets that are Binaural have two speakers, and thus cover both ears. As a result, you can hear more of what you are trying to listen to. Binaural headsets are perfect for involved communications or multimedia applications.

Monaural Models

For more general communication uses you may consider a MonauralBluetooth headset, which uses only one speaker and covers only one ear.

Boom Microphone

Bluetooth wireless headsets that have boom microphones have the traditional headset look with a microphone that arches inward toward your mouth. If you don’t mind looking like an operator, Bluetooth wireless headsets with booms offer the best quality in voice capturing.

Boomless Microphone

If the operator “look” isn’t quite your style, then you should opt for a boomless Bluetooth wireless headset. The microphones on most boomless headsets are located directly on the earpiece.

Design and Size

As with many products, Bluetooth wireless headsets come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Most often, the size and shape of a headset is a direct result of its intended use and functions. For example, a tiny lightweight headset with a flexible clip that hooks onto your ear is most likely intended for those who are always on the go. Meanwhile, a larger binaural headset with a long boom microphone is better for someone who plans on using it at a desk in a noisy office.

Battery Life

Although battery life is widely varied, the average talk time for Bluetooth wireless headsets is a little more than five hours. The wide variation is true with standby times as well, which can range from less than a week to about a month. You can rest assure, as the technology of Bluetooth wireless headsets advances, so too will the battery life.
